I didn’t think I could stand much more, my body writhing, my hips bucking as I rode his face. He held on, licking, sucking my clit between his teeth before flicking it with the tip of his tongue. Then it all came together and the tension exploded like dynamite. I shrieked, my hips rising from the bed, my thighs closing around his head. Wave upon wave of unspeakable ecstasy washed over me as I cried out until I went hoarse. I came down with a shuddering cry as my body continued to tremble in the aftershocks.
It didn’t matter that I was still coming down. It didn’t matter that I might have needed to rest. He didn’t care about that. He owned my body by then, and he knew it. He thought he knew better than I did what I needed—and maybe he was right. No, he was definitely right. He slid two fingers into me, pumping them in a blur while he sucked on my clit. I couldn’t stand it, I was sure I couldn’t stand it, I would die. I would die from sheer pleasure. Didn’t he know he was killing me? And yet I cried out yes, yes, more, begging him, urging him on. He pushed me beyond what I thought I could take as another orgasm tore through me, only minutes after the first. I never knew that was possible for me, and my head spun as I tried to make sense of it. But there was no time to think.
I felt his finger slide out of me. His mouth left, too. I pushed myself up on shaky arms to find him unrolling a condom over his thick length.
“Over,” he growled, and when I didn’t move fast enough—I was still fuzzy, in a cloud of pleasure—he flipped me over onto my hands and knees. I gasped, shocked by his sudden display of forcefulness. He entered me without a word, pushing inside so hard, so fast, our bodies slammed together. I cried out in ecstasy as just that one stroke was almost enough to send me over the edge again. He filled me so completely, it almost hurt. But it felt right, too. So right. I had never felt so right.
I let him take the lead, and he set the pace. I felt his hands on my hips, pulling me to him as he pumped in and out. I gladly let him ride me like an animal as he took control of both of us. His grunts, his growls, they set me on fire just like his sharp, deep thrusts did. There was so something powerful about what was happening there between us, something that went beyond mere physical pleasure. Was that the way it was supposed to be? If it was, I’d been missing out for a long time—like since way back when I’d first started having sex.
I pushed back against him, meeting his strokes, doubling the delicious sensations as our bodies crashed together. He chuckled, obviously liking it when I responded that way. He rewarded me with a series of sharp, deep thrusts that sent me over the edge again. I tightened around his thick shaft, then pulsed and quivered as I moaned in approval.
That wasn’t enough for him. He rode me, our bodies slapping together with every thrust. I loved it, wanted it to last forever. I might have come again at some point. It was all a blur. I lost all sense of time and place. I could only feel. That was all that mattered. It was just the two of us. Just our connection. I cried out his name, begged him for more. And he gave it to me, all that I could take and then some.
It was so nasty, so dirty. And so right. My entire body cried out in ecstasy, my nerve endings on fire. The tension built in my core, tighter and tighter, more and more until I started going crazy. I didn’t know I was capable of the lust he inspired in me. I didn’t know I had it in me. How did he know it was there? Or was he the reason for it?
The palm of his hand slapped against my butt as he pummeled me with hard, smooth strokes. I yelped in surprise, as a quick flash of pain melted into sweet, smooth warmth that added to the unthinkable pleasure I was feeling. I whimpered and wished he would do it again.
And he did. And then again. I closed my eyes to absorb the impact. I would let him do anything he wanted to my body because he knew my body. He knew what would make me scream.
“That’s right…come for me, baby…” He slapped my butt so hard, Isaw stars. Then my body started pulsing, starting in my core. The pulsing spread, turned into a shockwave that rolled through me and reached my fingers and toes and made me shudder.
“Yes!” I threw back my head, screaming in total pleasure. It felt like I was exploding from the inside out, my body shattering into a million pieces. All I could do was scream to tell him know how good it felt.
A few deep, hard strokes later and he followed me over the edge. I heard him growl and felt his body strain tense behind me before he fell onto the bed moments later.
I wasn’t sure what to think. Nobody had ever made me come the way he did. Not even close. No wonder I couldn’t stop thinking about him.
“Are you okay?” he asked, panting for breath. His skin was covered in a thin sheen of sweat. No wonder, considering how hard he’d just worked.
“What do you think?” I managed a short chuckle through my gasping for air. It wasn’t easy. I lowered myself to the bed on shaky arms. “I mean, you were there. You know what you did to me.”
“I sure felt it,” he grinned.
“You’re amazing. I can’t believe how amazing you are.”
“And you don’t deserve it,” he muttered, though he was still grinning.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean you were a bad, bad girl tonight.” He pushed himself up on one elbow. “And that’s not a euphemism. I’m not trying to be cute.”
“I know. And good thing, because you’re not very cute right now.”
He snorted. “There’s a reason there are rules in place, you know.”
“I know, Daddy.”
“Ooh, there’s something I could get used to.”
“Ha, ha.” I rolled my eyes. “Seriously, though. I know.”
“So, why do you insist on being such a fucking brat? That might not have been me tonight, you know. Following you around. It could’ve been the person who’s doing this to you. They could’ve followed you and hurt you.”
“I know.”
“Do you, though? I mean, really? Or am I gonna have to go through this again with you?”
“I know, all right? It means I know. I won’t do it again. I swear.”
“Did I scare you out there?”
“What do you mean?” When you were following me?”
“Yeah.”
I wanted to say no. Why did I want to say no? Why was I hell-bent on being a bitch? Making sure he knew I was in charge all the time? Instead of giving in to my all-consuming need to be right all the time, I nodded. “I was scared to death,” I whispered. My chin even quivered and tears burned behind my eyes.
“Maybe you can remember that the next time you want to run out of here and be pigheaded.”
“Yes, sir.” I stretched out on my back. “I just wanted to be free for a while, you know?”
I had expected him to laugh at me or at least tell me I was acting like a baby. Instead, he covered my hand with his. “You’ll be free soon. Ricardo and his guys won’t stop until they figure out who ordered that Palcohol. It shouldn’t take too long. It’ll be okay.”
“And then what?”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“I mean and then what. What happens after that? You know. When it’s all over?”
“You go back to your life, I guess.” His voice was way more quiet than I wanted it to me, and I didn’t like that I didn’t want it to be that quiet. He was right, wasn’t he? I had to go back to my life. And before he put the stupid idea in my head that I should quit being an actress, it had been enough. I’d liked my life just fine. I had wanted my life and everything that went along with it.
“I guess I do.” I got up and went to the bathroom for a quick shower. I didn’t bother saying anything to him, since there was nothing I could think to say. It would be better if he was out of there when I was finished. God, it was already way past one o’clock. I’d be a zombie for call. Everybody would be so happy with me at work. But when weren’t they?
I was toweling my hair when I got back to the bedroom and was dismayed to find that my bed wasn’t empty. Spencer was in it, snoring lightly to boot. I considered wa
king him and telling him to get the hell out—then again, having him there wasn’t a bad thing. Not entirely. I just hoped he didn’t think we would make a regular thing of it.
I slid into bed as carefully as I could, doing what I could not to wake him.
“I’m sleeping here from now on,” he muttered. “Get used to it.”
Chapter Fifteen – Spencer
And there I was, thinking I was being smart by following her out of the apartment. Look where it got me. Sure, it was great in the moment, but afterward I wondered if I wasn’t playing with fire. I knew I was. And I knew I was running the risk of losing my job. But Pax couldn’t fire me for sleeping with a client. Could he?
I thought about that as I got up after only a few hours of sleep. Well, I was used to getting by without enough sleep. I wasn’t used to waking up with a woman, though. And I didn’t know how much longer I would have to do it, either, but the fact that she’d sneaked out told me I had no choice. I couldn’t trust her.
She didn’t know what to say to me. That made two of us, because I sure as hell didn’t know what to say to her. Yes, the sex was great—she brought out something in me I didn’t know what there until she showed up in my life. A possessiveness, a strength. Something I couldn’t tame and maybe didn’t want to tame. That wasn’t me at all. I wasn’t that guy. But I had to be, didn’t I? Unless I was going nuts, and while she did make me feel like I was…
Pax managed to wait until we were on-set and in Charlotte’s trailer before calling. I stepped outside into the bracing morning air to take the call, holding a steaming cup of coffee in one hand.
“How’d it go last night?” Of course, he’d known about her sneaking out. Everybody knew. I’d even known about it at the time—she only thought I was sleeping. I sort of liked her thinking she could pull one over on me, just to see how far she would go.
“Fine,” I said. “I followed her until I caught up to her and brought her back.”
“No outside interference?”
“None. She was pretty much alone in a crowd.”
“Well, that’s a relief—though it might have been nice if she had flushed out our guy,” he pointed out.
“True, but I didn’t feel right just leaving her to her own devices. Not that I didn’t have a moment when I wanted to say to hell with it all and let her sign her own death warrant.” I glanced over at the trailer and wished I could get her out of my system. Yeah, she drove me nuts. But the thought of anything happening to her still made my chest tighten and my hands clench into fists. I couldn’t stop wanting to protect her, even more than I wanted to screw her. And that was saying a lot.
“All’s well, then.” His words hung heavy. I knew all wasn’t well.
“I slept in her room,” I finally said. He was only waiting for it, after all. “That was why I didn’t show up on camera in the living room.”
“And why did you do that?”
“Because I can’t trust her. Can you blame me? I’ll camp out on the floor in there for the rest of the case. She can’t get past me if I stretch out in front of the door.”
I heard him snort. The closest thing he’d come to a laugh when he was in a mood like the one he was in. “Yeah. You’ll camp out in front of the door. On the floor.”
“What’s so wrong with that?”
“Namely the fact that I wasn’t born yesterday, Spence. Come off it. You don’t go into a woman’s room fully dressed and come out in your underwear hours later when all you did was camp out on the floor. Try again.”
“Pax, listen…”
“No, you listen.” He let out an exasperated sigh. “I don’t want you to make any mistakes here. Nothing you can’t undo—and it’s so easy to make mistakes like that.”
“I know.” Did I ever know. “So you’re not going to threaten me with firing me or anything like that?”
“Come on. You know I need you too much to say something stupid like that. My luck, you’d call my bluff and I’d end up eating my words. Nah, it isn’t worth the extra time and expense of finding and training another agent.”
“Oh, thanks.” Even with my sarcasm, it was a relief. Not that I would start jumping in and out of bed with her, but I didn’t have to worry about the job. That was something.
“Don’t do something you can’t undo, is all I’m saying. And don’t do anything that’ll reflect badly on us. All I need is for the agency to get a bad name because one of my best agents let himself get seduced by a Hollywood bimbo.”
“Hey. Watch what you say about her.”
He laughed. “Oh, you’ve got it bad, kid. I knew you’d say that.”
“Damn.” I shook my head as I hung up. Yeah, I’d walked right into his trap, idiot that I was. He’d tell everybody about the crush I had on the big star and they’d start subscribing me to teenage gossip magazines.
As soon as I was off the phone, my instinct was to go back inside where it was warm. But the sound of whispering stopped me in my tracks. It was that obvious kind of whispering where the person in question wanted to scream and thought they were being quiet when they really weren’t. A female voice, coming from two trailers over.
I didn’t see how a little eavesdropping could hurt. So instead of getting back to Charlotte, which I knew was a risk, I crept closer to the location of the whisperer. There were two of them, I realized. The other was male. He was more successful at keeping his voice down, and I had to strain to catch his words over the breeze.
“What do you think you’re doing here?” I heard him whisper.
“Ow! You’re hurting me!” she replied.
“I’m barely touching you. Goddamn it, stop being so dramatic. I asked what you think you’re doing here, so don’t think you can change the subject that easily.”
“I’m here to make sure my husband is still my husband, and not screwing around with some slut!”
“How many times do I have to tell you that’s over? Jesus, it’s been over since it first happened! We’ve been over this and over this, and I’ve told you a hundred times to stop coming on-set like this!” Right then and there, I knew who it was. I strained my ears even harder. So she’d shown up, after all. The mark of a truly sick person, showing herself where she knew it was dangerous.
“Don’t tell me what to do, damn it!”
“How many times do I have to tell you how much trouble this could get us into?”
“I don’t care about the trouble. I only want to make sure she keeps her claws out of you. I can’t trust her.”
“But you can trust me.”
“Don’t make me laugh!” She did laugh, too, bitterly. “I plan to make her pay for what she did.”
“There’s nothing to make her pay for. How many times do we have to go through this?”
“Why won’t you just let me do what I need to do? Then we can both move on, baby.”
“I need you to stop. It’s gone too far. Everybody knows what’s happening. Especially what happened on Friday.”
“Wait. What?”
I decided that was my cue to break in. “Excuse me,” I said, stepping out of the shadows. I recognized Josh Carver from the photos I’d studied. “Mr. Carver. And you must be his wife.”
“And you are?” She put her hands on her hips, glaring at me. Her dark eyes practically spat fire.
She didn’t know I had seen much worse than her—hell, I had just spent a week with none other than Charlotte Banks. “Me? I’m a man with a lot of questions for the both of you.”
“I don’t have time for questions,” Josh said, and he immediately tried to turn tail and run back into his trailer. My hand on his chest stopped him. “Hey! Get your hand off me, you jerk!”
“From what I just overheard, the police are going to want to talk to you again—both of you,” I said, looking over his shoulder at his half-crazed wife. “They’ll want to know about your plans to make Miss Banks pay.”
Chapter Sixteen – Charlotte
When the trailer door opened, the last thi
ng I expected to see was Josh—and Andrea. I was halfway out of my chair and ready to scream my head off for help, but Spencer was right behind them.
“What are you doing?” I hissed. Like I needed a dose of crazy in my life. I had enough already.
He didn’t look at me. “Sit.” He pointed to the little couch at the far end of the trailer.
“What is happening here? No. No, you’re not welcome here.” I jumped up and took Spencer by the arm. “What do you think you’re doing, telling them to come in here like this?”
When he looked at me with his jaw clenched tight the way it was, he was a little scary. I backed down a smidge. Those eyes of his sliced through me. For a split second, I could fully imagine him in the Army, on the front line. I wanted to remind him I wasn’t the enemy.
I couldn’t make myself look at either of them. That didn’t stop Andrea from glaring at me like I just killed her cat. Or stole her husband. Maybe if she took care of herself a little bit, she wouldn’t have to be so jealous of me. I knew she used to be pretty—more than pretty, even. To get a guy like Josh, she had to be. But she let herself go. No wonder he was always screwing other women when she was all bloated from the drinking she did, the lush. I corrected myself—she might have been a bitch, but I did my time in rehab.
As they sat down, I took a glance out of the corner of my eye. Andrea pulled her long, dark hair into a messy bun. The girl needed some time at the salon. It was like she was too busy being obsessed with her husband to take care of herself. I rolled my eyes. Meanwhile, Josh didn’t have enough brain cells to look embarrassed.
“Detective Montez is on his way,” Spencer said.
“Why?” I asked. He gave me that look again. I guessed it was better to keep my mouth shut than piss him off, even though we would have to have a talk about it. I didn’t know who he thought I was that he could look at me like that.
“I want a lawyer.” Andrea folded her arms, still glaring at me. I wanted to wipe that look off her face.
